Footwear Designer
Full Name:
John Acevedo
Employer:
adidas John had his heart set on becoming an architect. But after he got his degree, architecture firms just weren’t hiring. So he improvised.
What do you do?:
I'm a footwear designer for adidas.
What was your path to get where you are today?:
When I was a kid, I had a tough time in school. My family spoke Spanish at home, so it took me a while to get up to speed in English-speaking classes. But I made it through okay and was actually the first in my family to go to college. Talk about pressure. I figured architecture was my thing, so that’s what I studied. I had always loved checking out cool buildings. When I graduated, the building industry was in a huge recession. Absolutely no one was hiring. So, randomly, I applied for an internship at a shoe company. Who would have thought that architecture school would come in handy for shoe design? It’s crazy. I had no idea I would end up here, designing shoes for Olympic athletes, mapping running patterns and traveling overseas. But here I am, hundreds of shoe designs later.
